Abstract

(Background and Purpose)With the growing emphasis on digital construction and spatial experience in architecture, structural systems are increasingly seen as visual languages that convey design intent. Cantilever structures, due to their “anti-gravity” nature, generate strong visual tension and trigger psychological responses related to stability and safety. Based on Gestalt psychology and Arnheim’s theory of visual perception, this study explores how canti lever forms create visual momentum—the illusion of movement or direction in static structures and how this affects spatial cognition. While prior research has focused on form generation and materials, few has examined the perceptual impact of structures. This study aims to fill that gap by analyzing the perceptual effects of cantilever structures and proposing design strategies informed by user feedback, thereby expanding structural aesthetics toward a percep tion-oriented framework. (Method)This study follows a three-stage approach—theoretical construction, case analysis, and perceptual experiment—to explore how cantilever structures generate visual momentum and influence spatial perception. It first builds an analytical framework based on Gestalt psychology and Arnheim’s theories. Then, case studies of One Za’abeel, Seattle Central Library, Busan Cinema Center, and Harbin Opera House examine how design variables such as cantilever ratio and support visibility affect user perception. Finally, perceptual evaluations using standardized images and questionnaires assess factors like “visual momentum,” “tension,” and “instability,” with statistical analysis revealing links between form and perception. (Results)By combining theoretical modeling, case analysis, and image-based experiments, this study systematically investigated the relationship between the visual mo mentum of cantilever structures and user perception. The experiments revealed significant differences in perceived tension, directional cues, and feelings of unease across different structural variables. Specifically, combinations of high cantilever ratios, concealed supports, moderate tilt angles, and curved edge treatments were found to significantly en hance visual momentum and spatial tension. Participant feedback also highlighted that perception is not solely de termined by formal attributes, but can be shaped by bodily experience and psychological expectation—manifested in responses to structural status, directional momentum, and emotional arousal. (Conclusions)The study proposes three structural strategies for enhancing perceptual experience: ① High cantilever ratio + concealed supports to intensify tension and visual impact; ② Moderate tilt angle + soft-edged boundaries to strengthen directional flow and dynamic cues; ③ Asymmetric composition + shifted center of gravity to evoke instability and exploratory desire. These strat egies offer methodical guidelines for perception-oriented structural design and suggest the potential for integration with parametric modeling, forming a feedback loop of “structure – perception – design modulation.” Future research could incorporate VR/AR and physiological measurements to expand user diversity and perceptual dimensions, advanc ing structural design toward greater scientific rigor and human-centric development.
