Abstract

(Background and Purpose) According to Semir Zeki, the founder of neuroaesthetics, the prefrontal cortex and orbitofrontal cortex show significant activation when individuals experience visual pleasure. This indicates that aesthetic experience is not merely a sensory response, but a cognitive process grounded in the brain’s neural information processing. As an essential component of human living environments, the structural order of interior space determines not only its functionality and practicality but also exerts a direct influence on spatial comfort and aesthetic perception. The dynamic balance between spatial order and complexity plays a crucial role in shaping visual harmony. Based on this understanding, this study aims to establish a scientific framework for optimizing spatial order from the perspective of neuroaesthetics. By integrating computational aesthetics with AI-based analytical models, it quantitatively investigates the relationship between spatial complexity and the perception of order. (Method) This research focuses on realistic interior space compositions. A series of experimental images with varying levels of structural complexity were generated using three-dimensional modeling and rendering techniques to create controlled visual stimuli. The structural elements were adjusted under consistent variable conditions in terms of form, hierarchy, and arrangement. Methodologically, the fractal dimension (FD) was applied to quantify the structural complexity of spatial forms. In parallel, a visual–linguistic cross-modal model (CLIP) was employed to encode the semantic attributes of each image across three key dimensions—Order, Complexity, and Aesthetic—thus capturing the semantic structure of spatial order. Furthermore, subjective aesthetic evaluations were collected through questionnaires. The subjective responses were compared with the objective computational indices, and correlation and regression analyses were conducted to construct a multidimensional framework for aesthetic assessment. (Results) The results demonstrated that aesthetic evaluations of spatial composition followed a distinct inverted U-shaped curve in relation to complexity, indicating a preference among observers for a moderate, optimal level of complexity. Within this optimal range, both the sense of spatial order and the semantic matching values related to ‘order’reached their highest points, suggesting that visual diversity and perceptual coherence coexist in balance. When spatial complexity was too low, insufficient visual stimulation led to diminished aesthetic engagement; conversely, when complexity was excessively high, cognitive load increased, disrupting perceptual order and reducing overall aesthetic experience. (Conclusions) Based on these findings, the study proposes practical strategies for optimizing interior spatial design by identifying the balance zone between structural complexity and perceptual order. It also provides a quantitative and theoretical foundation for the scientific understanding and precise evaluation of spatial order. Moreover, the research contributes to the interdisciplinary integration of neuroaesthetics and spatial design, offering a methodological framework for future empirical studies in aesthetic optimization across diverse spatial contexts.
