Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The phenomenon of liminal spaces, emerging within internet aesthetics, is derived from an architectural concept that designates spaces devoid of human presence. These spaces, while inducing feelings of unease, also generate emotional allure and foster online communities through shared images. Previous studies have primarily focused on the cultural and social aspects of liminal spaces. However, research on the actual neurological principles affecting human visual cognition is relatively scarce. This study aims to analyze how the visual characteristics of liminal spaces influence cognitive processes and modulate visual cognition, shedding light on the underlying neural mechanisms that drive these perceptual experiences. (Method) This study is composed of four stages. Firstly, this study conducts a theoretical examination of how the anthropological concept of liminality has transformed into the architectural and online concept of liminal spaces, analyzing existing literature to understand this progression. Secondly, it selects images of liminal spaces shared within online communities and categorizes them based on attributes of architectural and natural environments to analyze their visual characteristics. Thirdly, the study explores how the characteristics of liminal spaces can operate based on the neurological principles of visual information perception. Fourthly, the study extracts key keywords from the characteristics of liminal spaces, reconstructs images using MidJourney based on these keywords, and conducts a preference survey to assess their impact on viewer perceptions. (Results) The survey revealed that preferences for images of liminal spaces and changes in preferences based on the presence of humans vary by type. Images depicting low light, repetitive structures, and the absence of vanishing points showed low preference levels. Environments with low lighting were particularly impactful in diminishing preference, demonstrating that this feature significantly detracts from the appeal of the space, irrespective of human presence. Conversely, the presence of humans increased preferences in environments with repetitive structures, absence of vanishing points, and lack of spatial cues. Images with physical distortions showed a decrease in preference when human figures were added, and preference levels varied significantly among respondents. (Conclusions) This study explored the characteristics of liminal spaces and the neurological principles of visual cognition. However, the study acknowledges limitations in fully addressing the variety of environmental elements that influence spatial cognition and the nuanced differences between experiencing physical spaces and viewing their images. Additionally, the potential for AI-generated images to not fully reflect design intentions requires deeper exploration in future research. The design analysis based on neurological principles presented in this study is expected to provide a multidimensional perspective on the understanding of emerging spatial types.
