Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Contemporary architecture increasingly expands the boundary between formal expression and structural logic, producing spaces with a sense of floating and anti-gravity. Such designs weaken structural stabilit y and clarity of boundaries, disturbing the gravity-centered spatial order and generating a unique experience of “wei ghtlessness.” Yet this sensation does not arise from the absence of gravity itself, but from the interplay between for mal disruption and visual perception. In this context, the study asks: Can spatial order be established through percepti on alone, without structure? To explore this, it identifies visual tension as a key perceptual medium, analyzing how it guides cognition under unstable structural conditions. Building on this, the concept of tensional order is proposed as a theoretical model for non-structural spatial organization. (Method) This study adopts a three-step path of theoretical review – case analysis – inductive modeling. Based on Gibson’s ecological vision, Pallasmaa’s sensory architecture, a nd Norberg-Schulz’s phenomenology of place, it first analyzes the cognitive link between gravity perception and visu al order. Then, four architectural cases characterized by “weightlessness” are examined to show how strategies suc h as floating, inversion, and tension generate visual tension and replace conventional structural logic. Finally, combining theory and cases, a three-stage model—structural disturbance – tension induction – cognitive order—is proposed, introd ucing “tensional order” as a new mechanism of spatial organization. (Results) This study shows that “zero-gravit y” architecture deliberately weakens structural clarity and geometric stability. However, through design strategies suc h as asymmetry, shifted gravity centers, and directional tension, it generates strong visual tension. This tension guides the viewer’s gaze, encourages perceptual engagement, and allows spatial order to form through active cognition, even without structural hierarchy. Thus, tensional composition is not just a formal aesthetic but functions as a perception-b ased spatial mechanism, working through visual guidance, sensory activation, and recognition of order. (Conclusions) T his study demonstrates, through the theory of tensional order, that visual tension plays a key role in spatial perceptio n and reordering even within deconstructive contexts. The mechanism organically links form, bodily sensation, and cog nition, enhancing participatory spatial experience. The concept provides theoretical grounding for non-structural order in expressionist architecture, asymmetric strategies, and embodied cognition, while suggesting applications in VR/AR in terface design, cognitive architecture, and user interface design. Ultimately, tensional order offers a new logic for spati al organization and a theoretical basis for shifting toward an integrated design paradigm of form–perception–cognition.
