Abstract
Natural Yellow 3(NY3) of Curcumin, a polyphenol-based yellow spice extracted from ginger and family root plants, was used as a fluorescence reagent developing bloody fingerprints on a dark non-porous surface in this study. The Acid Yellow 7(AY7) is currently used to develop the bloody fingerprints in the practice of forensic science. However, since the reagent may have a quenching effect in which the intensity of fluorescence decreases in a large amount of blood, or under acidic conditions, there is a need for a reagent that can replace it. In this study, in order to compare the decrease in fluorescence intensity of bloody fingerprints treated with NY3 and AY7, appeared as the irradiation time of the light source increased, and depletion series method carry out on the various dark non-porous surfaces. Fluorescence-enhanced fingerprints were photographed at regular intervals while irradiating a light source and the average value of the fluorescence intensity of the fingerprint ridges and furrows was measured by Adobe photoshop CS6. The results of the experiment were that the fluorescence intensity and contrast ratio of the enhanced bloody fingerprints by NY3 was decreased as the irradiation time of the light source increase. AY7 also exhibited the same tendency. However, the fluorescence intensity of NY3 was much higher than these with AY7 and the more the blood volume of the fingerprints, the stronger the fluorescence intensity of NY3 than these with AY7. But in the opposite case, the difference between the two reagents was not large. This tendency was showed the same in all materials used in the experiment. Therefore, Curcumin-based NY3 is expected to be able to sufficiently compensate for the reduction in fingerprint contrast due to the quenching effect of AY7.
