Abstract

Bloody fingerprints are considered highly valuable clues in investigations because they are traces left by blood from the body of a victim or suspect. While bloody fingerprints are relatively easy to find at crime scenes due to the red color of blood, they can be difficult to observe with the naked eye when left on dark, rough, or rusty surfaces, or when the blood is diluted. In such cases, they may be treated as latent fingerprints. Bloody fingerprints play a crucial role in proving criminal facts through DNA analysis of the blood components that make up the fingerprint, as well as morphological information. This study aimed to visualize bloody fingerprints that were difficult to observe with the naked eye at crime scenes using the powder method and to compare the effectiveness of additionally using a blood stain fluorescence enhancement reagent through preliminary blood tests on the corresponding fingerprints. Bloody fingerprints left on a total of six nonporous surfaces were visualized with fluorescent powder, followed by preliminary blood tests. Subsequently, they were treated with natural yellow 3, acid yellow 7, and acidic hydrogen peroxide. The experimental results showed that natural yellow 3 improved the quality score of bloody fingerprints the most. The DNA analysis results for samples treated with natural yellow 3 after fluorescent powder treatment indicated that DNA loss occurred during the bloody fingerprint reprocessing process. However, DNA analysis for identification was possible for all samples.
