Abstract

Fingermark in blood found at crime scenes have strong implications for criminal investigations. However, if the bloody fingermark remain faintly on surfaces with dark or multi-colored backgrounds, they must be enhanced to be used for investigation. In this case, the blood may be enhanced to fluorescence using acid yellow 7 (AY7). However, AY7 has the disadvantage that the higher the blood volume, the lower the fluorescence intensity, and the longer the application time compared to other techniques. In this study, we investigated whether natural yellow 3 (NY3) can replace AY7 as a method for fluorescence enhancement of faint bloody fingermark left on non-porous surfaces. For the optimal composition of NY3, the ratio of distilled water to ethanol, the type of acid, and the appropriate pH were searched, and the results were compared with AY7. As a result, the ratio of ethanol to distilled water was 5:5, and the NY3 composition with a pH of 2 with acetic acid effectively enhanced bloody fingermarks, and the fluorescence was brighter than AY7 and the application time was very short, about 10 seconds.
