Perspectives on the Learning of Korean and Identity Formation in Korean Heritage Learners

초록

본 연구는 미국의 한 대학에서 한국어 수업을 듣고 있는 22명의 한국계 미국인 (Korean-American heritage learners) 학생들에게 한국어 학습과 자신들의 정체성 (identity)에 관한 의견을 조사 분석한 것이다. 설문지에서 학생들은 정체성, 한국 문화 행사 참여, 교실 밖에서 한국어 사용 등에 관한 질문과 좀 더 구체적인 대답을 요구하는 아홉 가지 개방형 질문(open-ended question)에 답을 하였다. 또한 학기 말에 지원자들을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 그 결과 학생들 대부분이 자신이 한국인이라는 것, 혹은 그 문화의 일부분이라는 것에 긍정적인 반응을 보였고, 다른 민족에 대한 생각도 긍정적이었다. 학생들의 부모님들은 대부분 한국어 교육에 관심이 많아 한국어 학습 기회를 학생들이 어렸을 때부터 가질 수 있도록 노력하였다. 학생들은 일상생활에서 말하기와 듣기에서는 거의 어려움을 보이지 않았으나, 읽기나 쓰기 등은 많이 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 한국 문화나 역사에 대한 기본적인 지식이 없어서 수업시간에 따로 다루었으면 하는 학생들이 많았다. 따라서 일반 수업과는 달리 한국계 학생들을 대상으로 하는 한국어 수업에서는 읽기와 쓰기를 연습할 수 있는 다양한 기회를 주어야 할 뿐만 아니라, 한국 문화와 역사 등 한국에 대한 기초적인 지식과 한국의 우수성 등에 관한 교육도 하여 한국어 교육을 통해 학생들로 하여금 자신의 뿌리에 대한 긍지와 한국에 대한 지속적인 관심을 가지도록 해야 할 것이다.
