Biracial Koreans and Their Approaches to Korean Language Learning

외국어로서의 한국어 교육, 40, 171~206. 본 연구는 이중 인종 배경을 가진 미국 대학생들이 한국어 학습에 어떤 접근을 하는지에 관한 연구이다. 설문 조사와 개인 면담 데이터를 통해 학생들의 결정에 영향을 미치는 세 가지 요인, 즉 부모의 영향, 사회적 문화적 노출, 그리고 외모를 분석하였다. 분석 결과에 따르면 참여자들의 한국어 학습 결정은 개인적인 상황에 따라 다양하지만 다른 언어와 비교해서 한국어의 상대적 중요성과 한국어의 실용적 가치에 대한 참여자들의 인식이 가장 중요한 동기로 나타났다. 외모는 이 결정에 강한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 보이는 반면, 한국 쪽 부모의 가족과 가까운 참여자일수록 한국어 학습에 더 강한 의욕을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 또 영어 모국어 화자들에게 한국어가 학습하기 어려운 언어라는 점과 학습에 요구되는 시간 할애가 대학에서의 한국말 학습에 중요한 장애물로 작용하고 있다는 사실을 밝히고 있다. 이중 인종 배경 학생들의 약한 인종적 정체성도 한국어 학습 동기를 저하시키는 요인으로 보인다
