미국 대학 계승어 학습자의 생애주기별 한국어 교육과 숙달도에 관한 탐색적 연구

초록

본 연구에서는 미국 대학에 재학 중인 한국어 계승어 학습자들을 대상으로, 그들이 청년기 이전에 받은 한국어 교육(정규 교육, 가정 교육, 기관 교육)에 따라 청년기 한국어 숙달도 분포가 어떻게 나타나는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 청년기 이전에 받은 한국어 교육의 시기를 최초 연령과 교육 기간으로 조사하여 이 둘 간의 중요성에 대해서도 비교·분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 청년기 이전에 한국어 교육을 받은 한국어 계승어 학습자들의 청년기 한국어 숙달도가 교육 경험이 없는 학습자들보다 더 높게 분포되어 있었다. 최초 연령의 경우, 고급 집단은 ‘한국에서의 정규 교육’은 학령전기(3-6세), ‘가정에서의 한국어 교육’은 영아기(0-1.5), ‘미국 내 기관에서의 한국어 교육’은 학령기(6-11세)에 최초로 한국어 교육을 받은 것으로 나타나 세 유형의 최초 교육 연령에는 다소 차이가 있었으나, 모두 청소년기(11-18세) 이전인 것으로 나타났다. 교육 기간의 경우, ‘한국에서의 정규 교육’은 고급 집단의 교육 기간이 중급 집단보다 4배 이상으로 길게 나타나 오히려 최초 교육 연령보다 교육 기간이 청년기 한국어 숙달도에 더 중요하게 나타났으나, ‘미국 내 기관에서의 한국어 교육’의 교육 기간은 숙달도 분포가 집단별로 큰 차이가 없었다. 이러한 본 연구는 생애주기별 한국어 교육 경험과 시기를 바탕으로 청년기의 한국어 숙달도를 파악하여, 날로 증가하고 있는 한국어 계승어 학습자들의 한국어 능력을 위해 생애주기별로 이루어져야 할 한국어 교육의 방향성을 제시하고, 구체적인 교육과정 개발 및 한국어 교육 정책에 대한 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

This study investigated how Korean proficiency among Korean Heritage learners shows in accordance with Korean education received before their young adulthood. Korean education was categorized into three types: ‘formal Korean education in Korea’, ‘Korean education at home’, and ‘Korean education at institutions in the United States’. The survey was conducted on the specific timing and contents of the type of Korean education they experienced before young adulthood. It was found that groups that were educated in all three types of Korean education had higher Korean proficiencies in young adulthood than those that were not educated in all three types. In addition, the first period of Korean education of the advanced Korean proficiency group was different depending on the types of Korean education: preschool years (3-6 years old) for the ‘formal Korean education in Korea’, toddlerhood (0-1.5 years old) for the ‘Korean education at home’, and early school years (6-11 years old) for the ‘Korean education at institutions in the United States’, but what all of these periods have in common is that they are before adolescence(11-18 years old). The results of this study will provide directions for Korean education contents and timing by life cycle for Korean heritage learners. It could also be used as a basic material for specific curriculum developments and Korean education policies.
