Textbooks play a crucial role in language education. Understanding a certain society requires not only mastering language skills, but also familiarizing oneself with the current affairs and cultural background of the country in which the language is spoken. The purpose of this study is to present the principles and practice of developing 'Current Issues and Affairs' Textbook for advanced Korean language learners. Until recently efforts to introduce textbooks that are rich in current issues and cultural insights have been severely limited. The textbook will hopefully improve Korean language learners’ knowledge of and literacy in Korean language, society and culture. The textbook categorizes current issues and affairs frequently appeared in news and TV into 10 themes: politics, economy, society, culture, international relations, science, education, daily-life, security and environment. Each theme consists of 3 sub-themes. 15 lessons focus on improving listening skills, and other 15 lessons are designed to improve reading skills. Listening-focused lessons are complemented by theme-related reading materials with speaking and writing tasks; all focused lessons are complemented by other skill-set improving tasks. Diverse materials such as speech, television news, interview, debate, discussion, column editorial column are allocated throughout the textbook. The textbook is designed to enhance advanced Korean language learners integrated communicative abilities and overall background knowledge of Korean society and culture.
