Abstract
Persuasive communications often include attempts to elicit mental images or pictures in the mind. Existing research and widespread commercial usage suggest that appeals urging consumers to imagine the product experience exert a powerful effect over product preferences. In this context, this paper examines the effect of mental imagery on cultural products such as performing arts. Two studies were conducted in the course of this research. The first study examined the main effect of mental imagery and the moderating role played by one’s level of involvement in the performing arts, which is an experience product. Mental imagery was found to exert an effect over consumer attitudes and purchase intention regarding the performing arts. Imagery appeal was also found to be able to generate a positive effect over product attitudes and purchase intention regarding experience product, confirming results from previous research. The second study examined the role of cognitive load on the effect of mental imagery on consumer attitudes and purchase intention. Cognitive load was used to check the effect of mental imagery. When participants were faced with a high cognitive load condition in imagery appeal, the imagery appeal was not only ineffective, but was found to even exert a negative effect on product attitudes and purchase intention. However, imagery appeal was found to nevertheless be effective provided there was low cognitive condition in the imagery appeal.
