Abstract
This study examines how a disparate group of Western (travel) writings by the turn of the nineteenth century are complicit with the banishment/vanishment of an authentic Korean nature. Many different angles working in each text make us hard to grasp an authentic Korean nature in tote. These diverse representations of the Korean nature cover not only the dichotomy of ‘pretty vs. ugly,’ ‘preserved vs. developed,’ ‘romanticized vs. demonized,’ and ‘resourcified vs. worthless’ nature but also the abstraction of physical nature. Some of them project their idyllic visions to the physical objects in the wild nature, while others connect a natural beauty to the potential for Korea’s future prosperity. The Korean nature becomes abstract values/ideas, fragmented natural objects/resources, or aestheticized but vague scenic beauty as a static entity. The appropriations of the Korean nature in such unrelated manners are also seen from what Koreans themselves have appropriated the stereotypical Korean images made by the Westerners such as “the Hermit Kingdom” and “the Land of the Morning Calm” to praise their own serenity and peaceful nature.
