본 연구는 『비밀의 정원』을 생태언어학적으로 분석하고, 인간과 자연의 조화로운 공존을 위한 생태인식 형성에 언어가 어떻게 기여하는지를 고찰하였다. 애런 스티베의 생태언어학적 방법론을 바탕으로 비판적 담화분석(CDA), 정체성 분석, 은유 분석의 세 가지 틀을 적용하였다. 먼저, 비판적 담화분석을 통해 주요 발화에 내재된 위계적 언어 구조와 지배 이데올로기의 작동 양상을 분석하였으며, 그 결과 이러한 언어가 타자 통제, 인종적 편견, 내면화된 지배를 정당화하며 파괴적 정체성 형성에 기여했음을 밝혔다. 다음으로, 요크셔 방언이 언어적 위계를 해체하고, 평등과 공존의 가치에 기반한 생태적 정체성 형성과 인간과 자연 간의 관계 회복을 이끄는 데 중요한 담화적 역할을 수행했음을 살펴보았다. 마지막으로, 개념적 은유 이론과 가이아 이론을 적용하여 정원은 가이아 공동체이다라는 은유를 도출하고, 정원이 인간과 비인간 존재가 유기적으로 연결된 생명 공동체의 공간으로 기능함을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 생태언어학적 접근이 문학 텍스트에 내재된 생태적 의미와 담론을 해석하는 데 있어 유효한 분석 틀임을 확인하였다.
Abstract
This study analyzes The Secret Garden from an ecolinguistic perspective to explore how language contributes to ecological awareness and promotes a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Drawing on Arran Stibbe’s ecolinguistic methodology, it employs three analytical approaches: Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), identity analysis, and metaphor analysis. CDA examines how the characters’ discourse reflects hierarchical language structures and dominant ideologies, reinforcing control, prejudice, and the formation of destructive identities. The use of the Yorkshire dialect functions as a discursive strategy that challenges linguistic hierarchy and fosters an ecological identity based on equality and coexistence, thereby facilitating the reconnection of human beings with the natural world. Applying Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Gaia Theory, the study identifies the metaphor “The garden is a Gaia community” and interprets the garden as a living ecological space in which human and non-human beings are organically interrelated. These findings demonstrate that an ecolinguistic approach offers an effective framework for interpreting the ecological meanings and discourses embedded in literary texts.
