Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of trans-corporeality and trans-corporeal knowledge in the toxic discourse film Dark Waters (2019) by Todd Haynes. Drawing on Stacy Alaimo’s framework, trans-corporeality is conceptualized as the flow and movement of matter between humans and the environment, while trans-corporeal knowledge is understood as knowledge embodied in the body. First, this paper examines how human and nonhuman bodies intersect and transform under exposure to toxic chemicals, emphasizing the visual representations of workers, consumers, and animals to highlight the interconnectedness of bodies and nature. Next, the study explores the tensions between scientific rationality and institutional knowledge on one hand, and the experiential and embodied knowledge of communities on the other, highlighting the significance of trans-corporeal knowledge. Bodily experiences and transformations that elude conventional scientific frameworks reveal the multi-layered implications of toxic substances and the complex interactions between human and nonhuman actors. Ultimately, this study aims to investigate the potential of toxic discourse texts to foster social, ethical, and political engagement with environmental crises.
