Abstract
There has been a growing theoretical and conceptual discussion about understanding ‘nation branding’ as a form of communication and relationship building. Based on this theoretical review, this study analyzed the patterns of South Korean cultural content consumption by 1,000 people from eight countries. The findings revealed significant differences in cultural consumption patterns based on nation or cultural region. These results suggest that, to establish a more relationship-oriented nation branding strategy, different communication patterns should be considered in light of consumers’ cultural and geographical distances. This study is significant in that it empirically analyzes the necessity of nation-branding communication, marking progress from the theoretical discussions of ‘relationship-building’ nation branding, which had previously remained a theoretical concept.
