Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the literary features of picture books awarded the Biryongso Golden Dokkebi Prize, a children’s literature award that has continued the tradition of Korean children’s literature since 1992. Of the total of 24 award-winning books, 22 published works were selected for analysis, excluding two unpublished works. A systematic framework for the analysis of picture books was developed to examine both the general characteristics and the literary features. The findings were as follows. First, analysis of the general characteristics revealed that the number of the award-winning picture books varied by year, with most retaining their original titles. Typically, the books were published in the year of the award or the following year, and the target age range spanned from two to ten years of age. With regard to format, text-based picture books and original storybooks were predominant. Second, the literary features of the awarded picture books showed that the genres with the highest frequency were fantasy and everyday life narratives. Common themes centred on daily experiences, while fantasy, social issues, and nature-related topics also appeared. Regarding characters, protagonists were most often animals or young children, and character portrayals tended to be static and two-dimensional. In the majority of cases, the protagonist served as the agent who resolved the central problem, and plot structures varied. Additionally, many stories featured happy endings, and the temporal and spatial settings were mostly the present, the realistic worlds. These findings suggest that picture books awarded the Golden Dokkebi Prize possess distinctive literary features and that these features may have a positive influence on young children.
