Abstract
The main goals of this paper are twofold: to summarize critically the recent developments in academic scholarships on the thalassocracy of the Bronze Age and to evaluate the relationship between the Minoan thalassocracy and the Athenian thalassocracy in the fifth century. Firstly, after Evans excavated the Palace at Knossos, there have been hot debates over the Minoan thalassocracy. In the past, there were two possible positions: that it existed or did not. However, nowadays the question has changed: it existed, but what was it like? It means the characters of the thalassocracies in the Bronze age were diverse, complex, multidimensional and repeatedly in flux. In addition, recent scholarship on the existence and areas of the thalassocracies includes virtually not only all the islands of the Aegean but also the Greek mainland, Syria, and Egypt. Secondly, the notion of the Minoan thalassocracy first appeared in Athenian documents in the fifth century when the sea power of Athens was rapidly growing and even the term thalassokratein was firstly used in connection with the story about Minos in Herodotos and Thucydides. Minos, the model king as a good judge according to traditional thoughts turned to a cruel tyrant to the Athenians. The Athenians who saw the rising of hegemonic power over seas began to compare their hero Theseus to the King Minos: Minos reduced Athens to the position of a tributary state while Theseus freed Athens from his tyranny. It means that the memory of the remote sea powers gave birth to the idea of Minoan thalassocracy and was used to justify Athenian sea power.
