Abstract
On coverage of an international conflict, news media tend to support their national interests, justifying the administration' diplomatic policy on the conflict. This study present study examined how Korean and Chinese daily newspapers reported the Tibetan 3・14 protest, which was occurred in 2008, considering diplomatic policies and positions of two countries. The study also explored whether Korean newspapers showed any difference on the coverage, depending on their political ideology. In addition, the study investigated how the Chinese newspapers dealt with the Tibetan issue, comparing the coverage of the Korean newspapers. Results indicate that the Chinese newspapers frequently utilized the Chinese official source. On the contrary, the Korean newspapers frequently quoted from the official source of ‘Dalai Lama Group’. The major news sources for Chinese newspapers and for Korean newspapers were Chinese news agencies, the Western countries' news agencies, respectively. According to the results from frame analysis, the Chinese newspapers used more thematic frame than episodic one for covering the issue. The Korean newspapers however used more the episodic frame. The Chinese newspapers adopted ‘criticism of Dalai Lama’, ‘restoring order’ and ‘explanation of Chinese government policy’ frames in their news articles. The Korean newspapers utilized ‘reactions of international community’, ‘criticism toward Chinese government’ and ‘fact delivery’ frames. Overall, the study shows an opposite result from the previous research, which have proved that news media tend to back up or justify the country’s foreign policy.
