Abstract
The legend of Asclepius combined two traditions: the saga of the hero and the myth of god. The saga told the story that Asclepius was the son of Apollo and Coronis, and the centaur Cheiron taught Asclepius how to cure patients. Asclepius became a great physician, but Zeus killed him because he brought a dead man back to life. This saga was then fused with the myth of the healing-god Asclepius, which might be the invention of Epidaurian. The process of divinity has elevated Asclepius to the realm of the gods. Immortal now, he still remained a competent physician. Meanwhile, Hippocratic medicine is defined by the tradition that looked to Hippocrates and the works attributed to him for inspiration and guidance. In this paper, I will explain the relation between Hippocratic medicine and Asclepius’ temple medicine. Hippocratic medicine was influenced by contemporary developments in natural philosophy. So Hippocratic physicians stood at the intersection of the traditional healing craft and the enterprise of philosophy. They displayed a variety of attitudes to the adaptation of philosophical method to the medicine. The cult of Asclepius had spread vigorously during Hippocrates’ lifetime. In his sanctuary, patients would spend a night in the abaton, where Asclepius was expected to appear in their dreams and give them directions for treatment. Grateful patients donated votive offerings representing the diseased organs, and inscriptions on tablets told of successful cures by the god. The inscriptions found in the excavation of Epidaurus show seventy cases of temple-healing. The original meaning of the term ‘Asclepiads’ is not quite clear. They may have been a closed clan among whom the practice of medicine was hereditary. Later on they opened their ranks, so that the term became synonymous with physicians. It is misleading to view the relationship between Hippocratic medicine and temple medicine as mutually exclusive. Generally speaking, Hippocratic physicians may even have welcomed the cult of Asclepius, because it allowed them to refer to him patients they were unable to treat.
