Abstract
This paper analyzes the healing records known as the “Iamata,” discovered at the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidauros and dating from the fourth century BCE. The Iamata is a set of inscriptions that record various cases of healing in the sanctuary, with detailed accounts of patients’ illnesses and treatment processes. The study reveals that these records go beyond mere healing cases, demonstrating the complementary relationship between medicine and religion in ancient Greek society. Furthermore, this paper also examines the depiction of Asklepieian faith in Aristophanes’ comedies, Wasps and Plutus. In Aristophanes’ works, the healing processes performed in the sanctuary are satirically portrayed, simultaneously exposing the expectations and skepticism that the Greeks held regarding the miraculous healings attributed to the god. Through a comparative study of different sources and the Iamata records, this paper sheds light on how the ancient Greeks embraced the cult of Asklepios.
