Abstract

This study aimed to understand the experiences of individuals providing peer support to those who lost a family member to suicide. Eight peer support providers for family members bereaved by suicide completed in-depth interviews. Through inductive thematic analysis of the collected data, six themes (feeling satisfied by supporting daily recovery, aiding in grief, guiding the purpose of life, recovering daily life and finding peace of mind, improving understanding of loss and accepting the presence of the bereaved, facing challenges in continuing to provide peer support, and discovering the inner growth of individuals) and 15 subthemes emerged, framed by two domains, related to the meaning of providing peer support and changes among peer support providers. Participants reported finding meaning by helping other families bereaved by suicide enhance their recovery in daily life and promote their grief process. These activities promoted the providers’ ability to cope with daily life challenges and psychological comfort while deepening their understanding of loss and accepting the reality of bereavement. Despite challenges in providing peer support, participants experienced personal growth, a sense of being valued, and improved self-esteem. The findings have important implications for social work practice, indicating that peer support activities for families bereaved by suicide can facilitate recovery and foster personal growth.
