Abstract

The purpose of this study is to highlight how the civil construction capabilities and the utilization of machines were in the 3rd and 4th centuries, focusing on actual battle cases. In this period Roman and Sassanian Persian armies alike achieved the same degree of sophistication as the armies of Caesar or Vespasianus, and brought no particular decline in Roman siege competence at deploying artillery and battering down walls with rams. Since the Persians imitated the Romans' ability to construct castles and the ability to construct tunnels, the Romans were able to utilize the technology to cope with it. The combination of familiarity and equality meant that the sieges between Rome and Persia were finely calibrated. In contrast with the Romans and the persians, it can be inferred that civil engineering construction tactics such as con/circumvalation and agger were attempted when the offensive army was numerically and strategically superior in Wei and Jin, the Southern and Northern Dynasties. In the actual battle, the catapult was used as a form of Han, and they also relied on water siege as well as siege machines. Compared to Wei and Jin, Rome and Persia were active in civil engineering construction and machinery utilization. The former was evidenced by the castles built with soil, and sieges were seen as the lowest tactic. The latter, on the other hand, were the castles piled up with stones, imitated siege technology, and plundered the siege machines. Therefore, the utilization of engineering technology in siege warfare depends on various factors such as the tactics of friendly and enemy forces, the characteristics and materials available to build a castle.
