Abstract
This study examines whether the view that the Roman siege took a tactic of mobilizing asiege machine after establishing an encirclement network to block the enemy’s access was appliedto the Jewish war. After analyzing the 13 siege battles Rome had played in the JewishWar, we found that only three had entered the assault after the encirclement network hadbeen established. The rest of the siege was mostly attack. This means that the tactics to attackafter establishing an encirclement network were not typical of the Roman army. The enemywas able to open the gate because of the Roman preemptive strike. Thus, the tactic preferredby the Romans in the Jewish War was an active and immediate aggression. In the early part of first century BC and during the Jewish War, the rate of siege was26.7% and 23.1%, respectively, while in the Caesarian period and the latter half of the firstcentury BC it was 46.2% and 41.2%, respectively. In the Caesarian period, the focus was onestablishing an encirclement network, and the rate of attack was low. In the early and latepart of the first century B.C., there were similar rates of encirclement network and aggressivewar with siege machines. The Jewish war had a character of aggression, and the encirclementnetwork had a nature of preliminary work leading straight to offensive. Thus, the Jewish warwas the most aggressive offensive. This means that the Jewish war cannot be seen as followingthe tactics of Caesarian period. There was no typical, firm, established siege tactic for theRoman army. The strength of the Roman army, which is a flexible response to the situation, was also applied to the siege tactics.
