Abstract

Caria was located in between two major powers. There was Greece in the west, and there was Persia in the east. They also had a long relationship with the Egyptians. This position enabled them to develop an idiosyncratic mixture of culture. When the Carians were finally liberated from Greek influence the satrap family of the Hecatomnids got the chance to show their power. Mausolus seems to have planned and commissioned his Mausoleum before his death. He presented his power through symbolic and historic motives and mythic characters. The style was a hotch-potch, but it was indeed full of various decorations. There must be political reasons other than artistic. Mausolus tried to appropriate the Greek style and at the same time achieve heroization of himself and his family which was of the Carian culture.
