Abstract
The Cretan origin of the Philistines, one of the Sea Peoples who invaded Egypt in the eighth year of the reign of Ramesses III (1176 B.C.), is generally accepted by scholars. However, the Old Testament says that there were the Philistines in the land of the Philistines in the time of Abraham(Genesis 21:30-32), Isaac(Genesis 26:8-9), Moses(Exodus 13:17), Joshua(Joshua 13:1-3, Judges 3:1-3), Shamgar the Judge(Judges 3:31), and about 1200 BC(Judges 10:6-8). This indicates that the Urheimat of the Philistines were from Palestine, not Crete. Additionally, Amos 9:7 could be translated as “"Did I not return(הֶעֱלֵיתִי)... the Philistines (to Palestine) from Caphtor?”. How can the presence of the Philistines in Palestine before 1176 B.C. as well as the return of them from Crete be explained? According to Diodorus (5.80) the second inhabitants were Pelasgoi, “who were in movement by reason of their continuous expeditions and migrations arrived at Crete and made their home in a part of the island.” I have tried to identify Pelasgoi with the Hyksos people in the Hyksos period (c. 1700-1530). Strabo (5.2.4) and Herodotus (2.171, 7.94-5) support the identification, saying that the Pelasgoi were the people in Greece before Danaus, the expelled Hyksos leader from Egypt, arrived at Argos (1511). Furthermore, Herodotus(1.57.2) said that “the Pelasgians spoke a language which was not Greek.” In this paper, I have tried to demonstrate that a part of the Philistine people went to Crete in the Hyksos period and returned to Philistia, their Urheimat, as the Prst (a sea People) did.
