Abstract

Cleopatra, the last monarch of Egypt, and of the Hellenistic Empire, was a tragic ruler. She believed that the only way for a crumbling Egypt to survive was to forge a friendly alliance with the emerging power of Rome, and she had to survive a power struggle over Egypt's dominion. For all this, the protection of the leading Romans was absolutely necessary. On the other hand, Caesar and Antony were not dazzled by Cleopatra's beauty, but were in fact politicians who thought that it was important for them to place Egypt under their sphere of influence to maintain their power and the national interests of Rome. However, since Caesar was assassinated in the Senate, and Antony committed suicide after losing a civil war with Octavian, Cleopatra was regarded as the woman responsible for the downfall of these Roman leaders from her time all the way down to Western modernity and became an object of hatred. However, hatred of Cleopatra can be properly understood from the perspective of anti-Egyptian sentiments based on anti-feminism which stems from patriarchalism deeply rooted in Roman culture, anti-monarchism during the heyday of the republic, and Romanocentrism as a new power in the Mediterranean world. The Romans basically looked down on 'woman' and 'alien', but after the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the Republic, they especially hated ‘king’. Cleopatra was a unique being who embodied all three of these elements. Therefore, when Caesar disregarded the Senate and tried to rule as a de facto king, not only restoring Cleopatra to the Egyptian throne, but also inviting her to Rome to treat her with various favors, hatred of Caesar was easily transferred into hatred of Cleopatra. When the Second Triumvirate established after the assassination of Caesar was dismantled and the civil war between Antony and Octavian had begun, Cleopatra was touted as an evil foreign queen who, in partnership with Antony, tried to end Roman domination. In the end, Antony, who was defeated in the war with Octavian, did not have a say in history, portrayed as neglecting the national interests of Rome and being promoted as an activist, while Cleopatra was branded as the originator of the historical ‘femme fatale’. In the end, the Republic lost the possibility of revival, and Octavian/Augustus, who became the final victor of the civil war, starting with the public opinion war, opened the Principate.
