Abstract
This article aims to present a balanced perspective on the history of the Egyptian kingdom by investigating that the narrative which explains the Nile cruise of Caesar and Cleopatra as a political trip is based on the Rome-centric and Euro-centric viewpoint. It assumes the Orientalistic stereotypes of ancient Egypt, civilizational Other – As the Egyptians are a fickle and unreliable race, ancient Egypt always has inherent factors that make it politically unstable. In economically very wealthy Egypt, pharaohs with absolute power had a large standing army and used religious and political ceremonies including coronation for their own political purposes. Therefore, I reconsider whether the stereotyped image of an ancient Egypt is based on historical facts. As a result, when the Alexandrian War broke out, all of Egypt outside Alexandria was politically stable for a considerable period of time. Egypt, which had already become a Roman protectorate, had little army to mobilize, and the navy seemed to have been maintained only to defend or patrol the coastal area of Alexandria and the Nile river. In addition, the coronation ceremony is not a one-sided religious ceremony that the pharaoh with absolute power shows to the Egyptians. It is a religious and political response shown by the priests and Egyptians who have a complementary relationship with the pharaoh when the pharaoh faithfully performed his duty to protect Egypt from foreign invasion or rebellion. The Nile cruise of Caesar and Cleopatra is not a long-term romantic trip that Caesar enjoyed losing track of time while being lured by femme fatale Cleopatra, nor is it a political trip elaborately planned by war-horses to realize their political and religious goals. Whether it was a break or a honeymoon, it would have been a short trip that lasted no more than ten days at most.
