Abstract

The Amazons were known for their residence in the ancient Mediterranean area and were renowned for being composed only of women. The various preserved sources of literature, archaeology and the arts describe these people as militant and stubborn, rejecting any compromise. The writing of Herodotos includes more information than any other written sources on the Amazons, and is particularly concerned with the encounter between the Amazons and the Scythian men. The historian focuses on the relationship between both groups. Through his writing we don’t just know general facts about the Amazons such as their belligerence, their antagonistic character towards men and their strong urge to rule. His writing on the Amazons also has a sociological nature in that he explores the axis of the relations between the two parties deeply. This aspect is not seen in other sources and is in itself Herodotos' account's most attractive feature. We can deduce one very significant fact in detailed ways and in a profound manner. The Amazons were not only powerful women in ancient times. They were also very good at taking the leading role in relations with their male partners. This fact consolidates the theory of the Swiss scholar Mr. Bachofen that the Amazons left definite evidence for a matriarchal society. Herodotos leads us to understand why the Amazons became very conspicuous and why they were so intimidating with his meticulous observations. This aspect is perhaps a point long ignored in traditional studies on Herodotos and the Amazons.
