Abstract

As Christianity expanded throughout the Roman Empire, by the middle of the second century, many Romans faced encounters with Christians. A few of them converted to Christianity, accepting the teachings of the Christ, but the majority of Romans showed very hostile attitudes toward Christians. They called Christians ‘the third race’ and argued for eradicating ‘the third race’. This paper examined the reasons why Romans had such negative attitudes toward Christians. The following conclusions were reached. First, the peoples who lived in the Roman world believed in polytheism. Therefore there were not any people who showed strongly negative attitudes toward the religions of others. Therefore the Romans were perplexed when Christians cursed the images and statues of gods claiming that the devil lived in them, insulted polytheistic customs and rituals and even attacked temples of gods. For this reason the Romans called Christians atheists. Second, Christians taught celibacy as the best mode of life because the end of the world was imminent. So many Christian maids refused to marry. This was a serious challenge to the authority of pater familias. Even married women denied the authority of their husbands. They requested that their husbands should observe the ethics of Christians. If their husband did not accept their requests they divorced them. Therefore Christianity was seen as a destroyer of the Roman family. As the Christians showed peculiar attitudes which the Romans had not seen before, Romans called them the third race. This term itself indicated that the conflicts between Romans and Christians were increasing.
