Abstract
At the end of his reign Domitianus executed Flavius Clemens, sent Domitilla to exile, punished several people confiscating their property. The nominal reason for punishing them was that they were atheists and adopted Jewish Customs without publicly acknowledging that faith. While the majority of scholars regarded this event as the evidence of persecution of Christians by Domitianus, several scholars, especially pro Jews, regarded it as the evidence of persecution of Jews by Domitianus. I tried to analyse this incident beyond the perspective of faith of Christianity or Judaism. Domitianus levied the Fiscus Judaicus with the utmost rigour. According to his order, those who adopted Jewish customs and all native Jews must pay the tax. Contrary to the common view these two groups were not consisted of one kind of people. ‘Those who adopted Jewish customs’ could be God-fearers or Christians. God-fearers who adopted parts of Jewish customs but did not converted to Judaism seem to be the main members of Jewish communities. An inscription of Aphrodisias showed that God-fearers were 45% of the Jewish community. So we must consider that God-fearers were more numerous than generally thought. If some God-fearers and some Jews became the victims of persecution by Domitianus, the persecution would influenced Jews. Therefore Jews of Rome considered the persecution by Domitianus as the persecution of Jews. Many Christians in the turn of 2nd century observed still the Jewish Customs. They fasted in Sabbath and didn’t eat the meat which were forbidden in the Law. So many Roman pagans could not distinguish Christians from Jews. Furthermore Many Christians in the turn of 2nd century were Jews in the terms of race. Such Christians were those who observed Jewish customs or those who were born Jews should pay the Fiscus Judaicus. As Domitianus enforced the tax on them, many Christians fell victims to the persecution of Domitianus. In sum, both the Christians and the Jews were influenced by the persecutions of atheists by Domitianus. But Flavius Clemens could not be Christians. The first mention of him as Christians appeared in the 8th century. All sources prior to it did not relate Clemens to Christianity. We can not decide whether Flavia Domitilla was Christians or not. Some scholars thought that the catacomb of Domitilla proved the faith of Domitilla. But the recent study of the catacomb showed that the date of the catacomb was 3rd century.
