Abstract
Judaism, Christianity and Islam are sibling religious traditions that have Abraham as their common ‘ancestor of faith’. Thus, they are categorized as Abrahamic or Semitic religious traditions. In fact, they have many things in common. For instance, as the same “people of the Book”, they share with one another common narratives in their scriptures, monotheistic faith, and commitment to social justice. Yet, in spite of—or because of—such similarities, there are also tensions among the three religions. In a certain way, the difference-in-similarity might be recognized and felt more conspicuously and seriously. In addition, the political and military clashes in history among Jews, Christians, and Muslims, such as anti-Semitism, the Crusades, modern colonialism, Holocaust, Israel-Palestine conflict, 9.11 and the Gulf War, IS(Islamic State) problem, etc., have aggravated the discord among them, which threatens the peace and well-being of the world. These religious and political conflicts cause mutual hatred among the people of the three faiths, and the hatred fuels mutual violence. Therefore, in order to make peace among three religions, a certain cultural effort to remove the hatred from people’s heart is necessary, as well as a political effort to reduce tensions and conflicts. Based on these understandings, this essay will critically deal with the issue of Muslimophobia—or Islamophobia— that has emerged mainly in the societies where Muslims are the minority, while Christians are the majority. To do so, I will discuss the differences and similarities among three religions, examine the historical conflicts around Jerusalem, a Holy City for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, analyze Islamophobia among Christians, and call for Muslim-Christian collaboration to make the world a better place.
