Abstract

This study explores, through a case-based approach, the educational significance of transmedia activities using literary texts in university liberal arts education, with a focus on digital literacy and writing instruction. Two instructional cases were designed and implemented using Puss in Boots and Frankenstein as course texts: the former centered on game and animation production, and the latter on prompt-based interactive 3D character creation. The course aimed to move beyond treating literary texts as objects of appreciation or retelling by extending textual interpretation into digital media production and providing learning experiences in which reading, writing, and making are connected as a continuous process. During the course, students analyzed narrative structures and characters’ traits and conflicts in the literary texts, and then externalized their interpretations in the form of code and prompts, reconstructing them through transmedia activities. By foregrounding instructional design and learning processes rather than quantitative measures of achievement, this study discusses the educational potential of literature-based transmedia activities in digital literacy-oriented liberal arts education and considers their implications for writing education.
