Abstract
This article concretely illuminates the influence of the De Re Militari written by Vegetius in the 4th century on Medieval European politics, religion, and literature. In particular, it demonstrates that the key concepts of his De Re Militari were significantly transmitted to the Early Modern military thinkers, because those ideas were never limited to military, but were also recognised for their values and benefits to rulers, clergy and writers in Medieval European societies. To that end, in this paper, first, the life of Vegetius and the key contents of his De Re Militari are summarised, and then how the De Re Militari was quoted, accepted and utilised by the rulers, clergy and writers in Medieval Europe is elaborated, and finally, based on the circumstances at the time, for what purposes their works were used are analysed. The Medieval European rulers, clergy and writers cited Vegetius’ De Re Militari in their writings, accepted its main ideas, and widely used them. Seeking advice from the text, the rulers widened their knowledge regarding how to properly control their officials and soldiers, and on what ruling qualities they should have in order to strengthen their authority. The clergy used it to obtain ancient knowledge necessary for preaching and to know how to control the monks properly, and the writers used it to describe vivid battle scenes. Through their various utilisation, Vegetius’ military thoughts of ancient Rome in his De Re Militari influenced not only the military, but also the politics, religion, and literature of Medieval Europe, and could be significantly maintained until the Early Modern period. In the early 16th century, Machiavelli was deeply influenced by Vegetius when he led the military reform in Firenze. This was possible because the De Re Militari continued to exert its influence in the European societies even through the millennium of the Middle Ages.
