최근 학계에서 군사학이 새로운 학문영역으로 정착되면서 ‘군사사상’에 대한관심이 높아지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리 학계에서는 이에 대한 합의된정의가 나오지 않고 있다. 비록 학자들이 ‘군사사상’이라는 용어를 사용하여 연구를 진행하고 있지만, 각자 사용하는 용어의 수준과 의미가 서로 다르다. 일각에서는 전쟁과 전략에 중점을 두는 반면, 일각에서는 군사제도를 중점적으로 연구한다. 이에 이 연구는 군사사상의 개념을 정립하고, 군사사상을 연구하기 위한방법을 모색하고자 한다. 지금까지 군사사상 연구는 역사학적 관점에서 군사사를 중심으로 하여 이루어졌으나, 필자는 사회과학적 관점에서 핵심변수를 중심으로 한 연구방법을 제시하고자 한다. 물론, 이러한 연구가 군사사상에 대한 군사사학적 접근의 중요성이나 의미를 폄하하고자 하는 것은 결코 아니다. 다만, 이 연구는 지금까지 이루어지지 않았던 사회과학적 접근을 통해 새로운 군사사상 연구방법을 제시함으로써 학문적 담론을 형성하고자 한다.
Abstract
Recently, military studies have rooted as a new branch of social science, and interests on ‘military thought’ have increased now than ever. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on the meaning or definition of ‘military thought’. Even though scholars have studied on that subject, they have used the term ‘military thought’ in different level and different dimension. Some focus on war and strategy, and others on military institutions, for example. Then, this paper defines the term ‘military thought’ and seeks a proper research method. While current studies have mostly focused on military history with historical perspectives, this paper suggests a different approach using critical variables from the definition of ‘military thought’, which is similar to the methodology of social science.
