초록

This paper aims to analyze Utopia written by Sir Thomas More where the writer attempts to construct possible institutions to reform the society through his humanistic ideas. In process of this, More carefully investigates the concept of the military where he considers the military as an indispensable base for the formation of a nation. Being mindful of applicability, More constructs the ideals based on reality and never cease to apply theses ideals upon reality. Although More admits Utopia, the ideally described world, possess certain limits and defects, he continuously examines these ideals within his deeply rooted idea of a nation-state. Interestingly, whether in the ideal or real world, there exists the concept of one's own military. That is to say, the formation of a military is not an option but a prerequisite for both ideal and real society. At the point where the nation-state was being formed, this humanistic contemplation for the military shows inevitable discrepancies between ideal and reality.
