Abstract
This study investigated interaction types and emotions to analyze the cognitive and affective aspects of collaborative writing processes in high and low-performing teams. Discourse analysis of 536 utterances collected from two teams, one high-performing, one low-performing, identified 10 distinct interaction types and 8 emotions that emerged during collaborative writing. The high-performing team demonstrated collaborative interactions at a rate more than six times higher than the low-performing team (54.27% vs. 8.63%), and exhibited significantly higher levels of productive emotional engagement (44.24% vs. 13.20%). A novel finding that distinguishes this study from previous studies was the identification of “incomplete interactions”. These appeared when the low-performing team attempted higher-order interactions (13.20% of utterances) but failed to fully realize them, representing incomplete forms of interactions successfully employed by the high-performing team. These findings indicate that the achievement of educational goals in reading and writing instruction through collaborative writing tasks may vary depending on the interactions and emotions among peer learners within teams.
