Abstract

This study deals with a problem of class, scope and arrangement of explanation items supplied to a main entry in Korean Dictionary. I tried to investigate comparing with representative four unabridged representative Korean Dictionaries published nowadays. There are some differences in micro-structure of explanation items in the dictionaries, especially on the class, scope and arrangement of and describing contents of explanation items supplied to a entry. Too much conventional frame and using cords would be complicated to general users. Because contents of explanation items have many relations of contents each other, it will bring a convenience for general users if explanation items can be appropriately integrated. The typical examples are an original word, etymology and morpheme analysis. The original word needs to be close to a main entry in having basic information but etymology and morpheme analysis will be more far from the main one. A sentence pattern and grammar information are enough to be one of explanation items. In the relational and reference word, a synonym, original word and purifying word are dealt on the meaning interpretation. It is needed active and passive words, and main and causative words in the relational words. An arrangement of explanation items has an order as ‘main entry-pronunciation-origin word-inflection information-word class-grammar information-meaning description-example-relational words-reference words- etymology-the frequency number’.
