Abstract

This study aims to examine the intonational characteristics of speakers from the Hamgyong region who currently reside in the Seoul metropolitan area. To this end, the utterances of 20 Hamgyong-born speakers were analyzed, focusing on prosodic features observed in phonological and intonational phrases. In phonological phrases, both rising and falling initial pitch patterns were observed even within the same lexical items. In particular, the low-initial phonological phrase (LiPP), characterized by a falling onset, does not occur in standard Seoul Korean and is thus interpreted as a feature of the Hamgyong dialect. Furthermore, the boundary tone of phonological phrases often showed a falling pattern not found in Seoul Korean, in approximately 50% of all cases, again suggesting dialectal influence. When combining rising and falling patterns at the phrase-initial and phrase-final positions, four pitch pattern types were identified. While some patterns appeared more frequently depending on the word, no consistent tendency could be determined. Finally, in the utterance-final intonational phrase, a non-Seoul pitch pattern of LLHL was observed in about 16% of the data, providing additional evidence of retained Hamgyong dialectal features.
