Abstract
Feuchtwanger's main literary works are recognized as most popular among the historical novel. His early drama works include various historical topics. As Feuchtwanger often remarked, he wanted to treat present phenomena and problems based on the historical background. So thought Feuchtwanger that historic literary works are most appropriate in understanding present situations with greater objectivity. He always saw the present situations through the history background. The main theme of the novel “The Ugly Duchess” is based on the ugliness. Feuchtwanger wanted to show in his novel, as a woman is forced by her ugliness, to unfold all slumbering in their talents. He has succeeded in that it provides the heroine of his works with valuable assets that it brings in the subconscious desire to gain a satisfactory compensation for their ugliness, the full development. So the author demonstrates in his novel, especially the lives of historic heroine Margarete Maultasch that fails tragically to their unusual ugliness. This representation of a people fighting his physical handicap, Feuchtwanger treated the ugliness, which occurred repeatedly in his early work which questions the relationship between activity and passivity or power and renunciation. The disabled person can not do all the things he wants to do. He must learn to give up his power. Feuchtwanger tried to treat the basic idea of the novel “The Ugly Duchess” once poetically in the Petroleum Islands, which is written in 1925.
