Echo’s Bones and Other Precipitates』(1935)에 실린 그의 시는 모더니즘의 영향 하에 폭넓은 상호텍스트성을 보인다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the poetics of Samuel Beckett with a particular focus on one of his early works “Enueg I” written in the 1930s. This poem, which was published in his collection of poetry titled Echo’s Bones and Other Precipitates (1935), demonstrates broad intertextuality under the influence of modernism. Not only does it imply a variety of well-known works, such as the Bible, the myth of Narcissus and Echo, The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, and Finnegans Wake by James Joyce, but it has also taken the refrain of “Barbare”, a prose poem by Arthur Rimbaud, and some of the words and structures from “Drunken Boat” (1932), a Rimbaud’s poem translated by Beckett himself, crossing the borderline between creation and translation. Moreover, its verses are re-written in prose from Beckett’s novel Dream of fair to Middling Women, which reflects his unique writing style, encompassing the works of other writers as well as his own. In “Enueg I”, Beckett describes the narrative movement shifting between move and stop through the steps of “I,” who am walking along the Grand Canal in Dublin towards the western suburbs. On the very path, we discover the narrator divided like “Narcissus” and the figure of “Echo” hovering around him. While a series of intense images and repeated sounds delicately portray the narrator’s painful inner side and nightmarish scenes, Beckett writes a new version of Rimbaud’s “Barbare” with the River Liffey that spews sewage on the background. This study is significant in that it takes a closer look at Beckett’s poetry as it presents “Enueg I” with its intertexts and that it predicts the poetics of silence that appears in his later works through the relationship between the subject and the other and through the distrust in the language, which are distinctively featured in his texts.
