Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to show that literature reflects time. To achieve this, this article considers that ancient Greek tragedies can reflect features of that time and that Shakespeare’s works can reflect the view of the world at that time. As all human activities are products of time, literary works are also symbolic of the time when they are published. That literature is limited by the time implies, in concreto, that literary works cannot transcend social, cultural, or historical boundaries. Literature as a genre of art develops in its relation to history. According to Hegel, the relationship is based on the development of an absolute spirit which is art because absolute spirit develops within history that belongs to the object spirit. Hegel asserts that the interactive development between art and history is possible in a negative self-relation between absolute and objective spirit. It means that the absolute spirit does not develop beyond the finite time. The absolute spirit rather needs the finite time for its development. The absolute spirit that is a-spatiotemporal develops spatiotemporally. This shows the negative self-relation of absolute spirit. According to Hegel, art belongs to the absolute spirit while the literature reflects the reality. It signifies that the autonomy of art is limited by time. Literature does not correspond to reality. It develops autonomously with intrinsic principles for its development. It reflects reality and the times. Thus, it is influenced by reality and vice versa. In this context, literature can be regarded as a diorama that imitates our real world and time. However, the diorama can never be our real world because literature is fictive.
