본 논문은 베케트의 『몰로이Molloy』에 나타난 서사기법과 팔랭프세스트 글쓰기를 연구하는 것을 목표로 한다. 베케트의 소설 작품들은 프랑스 문학에서 내적·외적 상호텍스트성을 대표하는 작품들로써 팔랭프세스트 글쓰기의 세계를 보여주고 있다. 특히 크리스테바와 주네트같은 프랑스 구조주의 이론가들은 상호텍스트성에 대한 질문을 통해 텍스트를 분석하여 포스트모더니즘적 전망을 제시하였다. 문학의 형식적 연구와 수사학 이론, 장르 이론을 천착한 문학 이론가인 주네트는 [팔랭트세스트]에서 하나의 원텍스트와 거기에서 파생된 또 다른 텍스트를 연결하는 다양한 관계를 지칭하는 하이퍼텍스트성을 심도 있게 성찰하고 있다. 이 연구서에서 주네트는 서양 문학사에 나타난 구체적인 작품 분석을 통해 팔랭프세스트 글쓰기에 대한 개념을 제시하고 있다.『몰로이』는 무엇보다 오디세우스의 세계를 암시하고 있다. 원텍스트에 기대어 새로운 텍스트를 생산한다는 논의로부터, 우리는 본 연구 대상인 『몰로이』가 무로부터(ex nihilo) 창조된 것이 아니라는 점을 고찰하였다. 팔랭프세스트 글쓰기인 다시쓰기의 쓰기는 무엇보다 모방적 담론을 생산하는 것이 아니라 다시 쓰는 과정에 새로운 창조가 가능하다는 것을 의미한다. 외형상의 이야기가 일종의 탐정 소설의 형태인 『몰로이』의 1부에서는 어머니를 찾는 몰로이의 이야기가 전개되고, 2부에서는 몰로이를 찾아 나서는 모랑과 그의 아들의 이야기가 전개된다. 소설은 나라는 일인칭 화자의 진술로 시작되는데,. ‘화자-나’는 자신을 몰로이라고 부르지만 진정한 이름인지는 알 수 없다. 이 소설에서 1부와 2 부는 서로 반영하는 팔랭프세스트 글쓰기를 통해 거울의 구조 즉 심연 체계(미장 아빔)의 구조를 이루고 있다. 결국 베케트는『몰로이』에서 원텍스트의 형식과 내용을 패러디하여 변형시킴으로써 형식의 형이상학에 기초를 둔 새로운 문학을 탄생시킨다.
Abstract
This research aims to analyse the narrative technique of Samuel Beckett's Molloy through the critical concept of palimpsestic writing. Samuel Beckett's novels, known for using the technique of intertextuality, can be seen as illustrating palimpsestic writing in French literature. In particular, this postmodernist approach to the text addresses textual analyses by Julia Kristeva and Gérard Genette, French structuralist critics engaged in the question of intertextuality in literary creation. Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree by Gérard Genette is highly regarded for its wide and far-reaching conceptualization of hypertextuality. With the concept of palimpsest, Genette provides a great overview of how texts relate to other texts, from ancient attempts to (re)write what happened between The Iliad and The Odyssey to John Barth and Oulipo and other postmodern fiction writers. In Molloy, Beckett creates characters reminiscent of the world of Odysseus. Rewriting means that a new creation is possible. Beckett recreates the myth of Odyssey using techniques of repetition and negativity in order to parody the former work. The plot, what little there is of it, is revealed in the course of the two inner monologues that make up the book. In the first part of Molloy, which takes the form of a kind of detective story, Molloy is looking for his mother, while Moran is looking for Molloy in the second part. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 in this novel constitute a mirror structure, a structure of mis en abyme, through intertextuality. With his remarkable ability to mix forms, imagination, discourses, paradox, subjects and wiry humour, Beckett transforms a mere dispensable or meaningless words into a new exquisite creation.
