Abstract
This article examines Samuel Beckett’s early literary thought in a comparative context, focusing on his course “Racine and the Modern Novel,” which he taught at Trinity College Dublin in the early 1930s. While pursuing a double major in French and Italian literature, Beckett deeply engaged with the authors and works he studied, which would later shape his intellectual and artistic outlook. After serving as lecteur d’anglais at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, he returned to his alma mater to teach literature. During this period, Beckett developed a critical view of the European literary tradition, distinguishing authors he regarded as models — Racine, Dostoevsky, Proust, Gide, and Flaubert — from those he rejected, such as Corneille, Stendhal, the Romantics, and Balzac. In this course, Beckett drew on materials from literature, painting, and music to build his own binary framework. Based on published accounts and documented sources on students’ lecture notes, this study illuminates the formation of Beckett’s early aesthetics and lays a foundation for understanding the intertextual and cross-disciplinary dynamics in his early works.
