카뮈의 소설 『이방인 L’Etranger』의 연극적 수행에 관한 고찰 - 극단 피악(PIAC)의 <이방인>을 중심으로 -

본 논문은 알베르 카뮈의 소설 『이방인』을 극단 피악(PIAC)이 무대화 한 <이방인>의공연분석을 통해 소설을 연극화 할 때 나타나는 수행적인 변환에 관해 고찰하였다. 우선, 수행성에 관한 이론적 고찰을 한 후, 소설을 연극화 할 때 나타나는 수행성을 세 가지 단계에 따라 분석하였다. 1. 서사적 층위, 2. 담화적 층위, 3. 공연적 층위 등이 그것이다. 관념적인 문자언어로 이루어진 소설을 구체적인 무대기호로 변환하는 것은 소설에 대한 접근성을 높이고 이해도를 끌어올리는 긍정적 기능을 할 수 있다. 극단 피악의 <이방인>은 포스트드라마의 연극적 환경 속에서 재현의 미학에 구속되지 않는 표현의 자유를십분 활용하여 선명한 주제의식을 가지고 흡인력 있는 무대를 선보임으로써 카뮈의 『이방인』에 대한 관심을 자극하고 흥미를 촉발하는 성과를 일궈낸 것은 긍정적 성과이다. 하지만 주제적인 측면에서 원본 소설에 내포된, 『이방인』 특유의 ‘낯선’ 주제를 비틀어 범속한주제로 수행적 변환을 한 것은 원작의 가치와 의의를 우회시킬 수 있다는 측면에서 재고의 여지가 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze what kind of performative changes appear when a novel is theatricalized through a theatrical performance represented by the compay PIAC based on Albert Camus’ L’Etranger. First of all, this paper made a theoretical study on performance. And then, this paper anayzed the characteristics that appear when the novel is dramatized in three leves : 1. narrative level, 2. discoursive level, 3. performative level. Converting a novel into a concrete stage sign can have a positive function to increase accessibility and understanding of the novel. The performance L’Etranger represented by the company PIAC took advantage of the postdramatic aesthetics free from representation aesthetics. As a result, it showed a powerful stage stimulating interest in the L’Etranger. However, in terms of themes, the specific ‘strange’ themes contained in the original novel L’Etranger were replaced with an old and trivial theme. This is a negative aspect that reduces the value and significance of Albert Camus’ L’Etrnger and should be corrected in the future.
