본 논문은 20세기 프랑스 문학비평가 모리스 블랑쇼의 『카오스의 글쓰기』를 독서하며 블랑쇼 자신이 표명하는 문학(예술)론을 탐색한다. 블랑쇼는 문학의 소명이 언어적 사유 속에 상실된 ‘지금, 여기’의 실존을 튀어나오게 하는 사건에 있다고 주장한다. 하이데거는 이 사건 을 ‘에어아이크니스’라고 부른 바 있다. 하이데거가 언어적 사유의 세계를 중심에 두고 실존 이 드러나는 사건을 예외 상태로 보았다면, 블랑쇼는 하이데거의 관점을 철학사의 오류라고 지적하며, 언어를 통해 구축된 코스모스의 세계보다 실존의 세계, 즉 카오스의 세계가 더 먼 저 있으며, 더 본질적인 세계임을 주장한다. 코스모스의 찢어진 틈으로 카오스를 경험하게 하 는 예술이 ‘카오스의 글쓰기’다. 따라서 이 글쓰기는 의미를 생산하지도, 그 의미를 소통하지 도 않는다. 그렇다면 왜 미술이나 음악과 같은 예술이 아니라 글쓰기여야 하는가? 소통하지 않는 이 글쓰기는 독자와의 관계에서 무엇을 할 수 있는가? 본 논문에서는 블랑쇼 자신의 말 을 토대로 상술한 물음에 대해 ‘언어에 저항하는 언어의 필연성’이라는 가설을 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper explores Maurice Blanchot’s own theory of literature (and art) through a reading of The Writing of Chaos. Blanchot argues that the vocation of literature lies in the event that brings forth the presence of the ‘here and now’ that is lost in linguistic thought. Heidegger called this event ‘ereignis’. Whereas Heidegger centers the world of linguistic thought and sees the event of existence emerging as an exception, Blanchot points to Heidegger’s view as an error of philosophical tradition, arguing that the world of existence, the world of chaos, is more fundamental and more essential than the world of cosmos constructed through language. Art that allows us to experience chaos through the rifts in the cosmos is ‘writing of the chaos,’ and as such, this writing neither produces meaning nor communicates meaning. Why, then, should it be writing and not painting or music? What can this non-communicative writing do in its relationship with the reader? In this paper, I will use Blanchot’s own words to answer the above questions and propose the hypothesis of the ‘inevitability of language in resistance to language’.
