Abstract

This paper aims to compare and analyze the fantastic elements in German Romanticism and Latin American Magical Realism, focusing on the ghost motif. Fantasy is recognized as one of the most significant features of both German Romanticism and Latin American Magical Realism. In German Romanticism, fantasy serves as a tool to critique rationalism, while in Latin American Magical Realism, it becomes a critical lens through which to view historical periods, reflecting the influence of ancient belief systems and indigenous folklore. The ghost, the manifestation of the dead in the real world, is the powerful element of fantasy that draws the boundaries of our perception of the real world and reveals the contradictions of reality. In Das Majorat, ghosts are accepted as real and cannot be explained by the senses or the imagination. The ghost also serves as a metaphor to emphasize the uncanny, which is an important characteristic of E.T.A. Hoffmann's fantasy, and to reveal the sinister nature of humanity surrounding the right of firstborn inheritance. Gabriel García Márquez's ghosts are not frightening and terrifying, but are part of the daily life of the living, emphasizing the inseparability of death and life, past and present. In Cien años de soledad, ghosts are a metaphor for the union of incompatible, contradictory elements, and by superimposing the real and the prophetic in the narrative structure, García Márquez demonstrates the ghostly nature of the mixture of the real and the unreal.
