Abstract

This paper focuses on the discourse of women’s literature from the 1990s, which has been the subject of active critical attention in recent literary criticism and academic discourse. The problem of narrating women’s literary history, which corresponds to the rewriting of minority histories, faces difficulties in the face of the contradictory concerns of ‘universality’ and ‘specificity’. The main point of critique is often developed in a way that either affirms or denies the performativity of the historical narrative subject, leading to the establishment of one of these values as the truth of alternative historical writing. However, research on 'women's literature' is, before anything, an issue of discourse. When we think more actively about this fact, it becomes necessary to understand the specific working principles and effects of ‘discourse’ itself, and accordingly, the problem of historicization can unfold differently. This paper explores the possibility of rearranging the era-gender code of '1990s women’s literature' by passing through Michel Foucault’s methodology of discourse studies as presented in The Order of Discourse—the principles of subversion, discontinuity, specificity, and exteriority. In particular, as an example of such methodological practice, it compares the language used in the 1995 ‘Women’s Literature Special Issue’ as an example of reading '90s women’s literature through ‘discontinuous practices’.
