<무정>과 대중성 획득의 서사구조

Abstract

As we recognize that the Western and oriental, especially Japanese, Chinese and Korean modernization developed with heterogeneity, modernity of <Mujeong> should be understood the same as heterogeneity of Korean modernity. Reading <Mujeong> considering heterogeneity of Korean modernity, the society of the day and the narration have homogeneity, the mixture of premodern and modern. This article is focused on the narrative structure of <Mujeong> attained popularity tally with the flavors of readers of the day. It will search the narrative strategy of attaining the popularity in <Mujeong>. <Mujeong> is the serial story in Mae-il newspaper appeared serially in 126 installments. The opening part of narration makes readers see visions of splendid modern by the appearances of the English teacher of Kyungsung school, Lee Hyungsik, Kim's daughter Kim Seonhyung preparing studying abroad, Sin Wooseon talking mingled with English. Park Youngche who appears since the fourth round represents the woman of premodern stubborn to chastity, and make readers get wild with enthusiasm by recalling Korean public morals. Many parts in the narration remind the hero and the people evolutionary. In the ending part it arouses the reader's noble hope by showing the developing people's blueprint. Eventually the secret of popularity of <Mujeong> was the narrative strategy which arranged the curiosity and hope of the people of the day appropriately. The narrative strategy of modern-premodern blueprint which Lee Gwangsu presented in <Mujeong> stimulated the flavors of readers of the day. It became the best seller.
