1971년 발표된 이광수의 『無情』은 당대 신청년들의 뜨거운 관심과 호응을 받는데, 여기에는 이 작품이 소설로서는 처음으로 ‘연애’를 주된 테마로 다루었다는 점이 결정적 원인으로서 작용하고 있다. 동경 유학생들에 의해 유입된 ‘연애’는 당시 조선 사회전반에서 일기 시작했던 구습에의 비판, 특히 여성의 지위향상에 대한 지속적 관심과 맞물려 <유행하는 독감모양으로 연애전염병>을 조선사회 全域에 퍼뜨리고 있었다. 정신성 중시와 일부일처제 준수를 지향한 새로운 애정형태 ‘연애’가 이처럼 당대 사회에서 맹위를 떨칠 수 있었던 것은 조혼, 강압결혼 등 한계에 달한 전근대적 가족제도에 대한 불신이 결정적 요인으로서 작용하고 있다. 이와 같은 변혁기 조선의 모습을 『無情』은 ‘연애’라는 렌즈를 통하여 파악하고 있다. 『無情』에서 ‘연애’의 사회적 의미는 두 가지 형태의 사랑을 통해 고찰되고 있다. 세 명의 주인공들, 이형식을 중심으로 김선형, 박영채가 엮어내는 삼각의 애정이 그것이다. 여기서 이형식과 김선형이 사제지간의 관계로서 애정을 형성해 가는, 당대로서는 드물었던 사랑의 형태를 제시하고 있다면, 이형식과 박영채는 舊緣, 報恩과 같은 구시대적 애정의 요소에 상당부분 기초하여 사랑을 형성해가고 있다. 그리고 이 세 인물간에 형성되는 이질적 사랑의 형태는 제각기 일본유학생 출신의 교사와 여학생, 기생이라는 인물들의 외형과 긴밀하게 연결, ‘연애’의 근대적 의미를 확보해 가게 된다.
Abstract
Lee, Kwang-Su's novel Mujung had been attracted by young people because of it's theme which is the love. Such theme is first mentioned by novel Mujung. The love that flowed in by students studying Tokyo spreaded all over the country with interesting of rasing women's status in society. The reason that all over the country observe to the love was the distrust of the marriage institution like an early marriage and oppress marriage. The novel Mujung seizes the features of revolutionize time of Chosun. We can consider the social meaning of the love in novel Mujung by two type of love. The first type of love is relationship between 'Lee, Hyung-Sik' and 'Kim, Sun-Hyung'. The second type of love is relationship between 'Lee, Hyung-Sik' and 'Park, Young-Chae'. The relation of love between 'Lee, Hyung-Sik' and 'Kim, Sun-Hyung' is made up with rare love relationship between teacher and student. But the relation of love between 'Lee, Hyung-Sik' and 'Park, Young-Chae' is made up with old style relation of love like an old fate and favor. Finally in this novel, the modern meaning of love is established by the heterogeneous relationship of love.
